Converting your Attic into a Media Room
By Brenda Reeves
If you have an attic that isn't being utilized, it would make a great space for a home media room. Whether you want to install state-of-the-art equipment or just a large plasma television, the attic makes a great place for the family to get together and enjoy some movies. Cleaning Out the Clutter Of course, the first step is cleaning out the attic, and removing everything that won't ultimately be included in the new media room. Once the room is cleared, you'll want to take some measurements of the overall room dimensions. Wall Choices You've got several choices for the walls. While some people feel that a media room should have acoustic fabric on the walls, this is not always an attractive look. You might opt to put this wall treatment only on one wall, and use more standard treatments on the other walls. Some people also like the look and sound of wood paneling in home theaters. If your attic has sloping walls on the sides, you would only want to panel part of the way up the wall. Carpeting and Flooring It's often best to install carpeting in the attic, because this will help cushion the floor and make the sound of footsteps less noticeable overhead on the lower floor. Windows in attics are often small, but you'll want to make sure you have room-darkening shades installed to keep outside light from coming in. Adding Equipment Once you have the walls and floor finished, it's time to start adding the equipment. When you are installing the speakers and other electrical components, try to hide as much of the equipment as possible. This will make the room looks less visually cluttered. A wireless speaker system is a good choice, as it will make the room look neater as well as making it safer. A television is a must-have addition in the attic media room. Decide which wall would be best suited for the screen. This is where the measurements you have taken will come in handy. Often the best wall is at the far end of the attic, so that you have the longest distance to arrange the seating. You should also try to arrange the room so that when people enter the room, they won't be blocking the view of the screen. Install the screen, and then arrange the seating a comfortable distance away from the screen. You'll want to make sure the seating isn't so close that you can see the pixilation of the screen, especially when watching anything less than high definition media, but not so far away that it degrades the viewing experience. You can refer to the manual for your screen for optimal viewing distances. Seating When choosing the seating, you'll want to make sure to have enough seating for the average number of viewers, with perhaps a few options for additional seating when it becomes necessary. Don't install too many extra seats, because that will only waste the floor space. You should choose the most comfortable seats that you can comfortably afford, since the seating is important to the viewing experience. Chairs that recline are optimal. Make sure when designing your attic media room that you take other activities into consideration as well. When you're not watching movies, you might want to sit and listen to music, use a laptop computer or read, so make sure you have seating available for these types of activities also.
