Color Defines Elegance in a Dining Room
By Brenda Reeves
When you have a formal dining room in your home, you can use colors on the wall to create an elegant space for entertaining. You can add a lot of personality to a room with wall color, and the colors that you choose can very well determine the mood for the entire room. Look for colors that will showcase the furnishings and architectural features that are already present in the room. Then consider your favorite style of entertaining, and you may decide that your formal dining room needs to be on the casual side of formal. Defining Decor Start by simply looking at your dining room. Look at your floors, window treatments, upholstery and wood colors in the room. Obviously, you only need to consider the things that are staying in the room. You may also want to consider your china pattern. Look to see what the dominant color in the room and accessories and decide if you are happy with that color or if you would like to change the color. With paint, you can either accentuate the existing wall colors or shift them to a new dominant color. You can also change window treatments, seat cushions or add new or different china to emphasize a particular hue. Understanding Gatherings You can really make any color combination work, and if they are colors that you enjoy, or if they complement your china pattern, then you can make these colors work for your dining room. As you are considering what paint colors you want to have in your room, think about your favorite type of cuisine, because that may give you an idea of the color that would work in your dining room. For example, if you enjoy Asian cooking, you may enjoy a simple black, white and red color scheme in your dining room. Or if you love French cooking, you may opt for slate blue and cream as a dining room color scheme. Going Traditional If you want to create a traditional look for your dining room, then you will want to include warm colors like cream, beige and brown to create a homespun look. Then you can add accents in deep red or sage green along with some darker shades of brown. Many times thee colors blend nicely to form a traditional dining room. By keeping your trim colors dark and you ceiling and wall colors light, you can create a traditional vibe in your dining room. Making It Modern If you decide that you would prefer a modern style for your dining room, then try to keep your furnishings minimal, and select furniture that is simple and sleek. Use pale neutral shades like off white or gray for your wall colors. They will make your room look sleek and modern, and then by adding off white or pale gray ceilings, you can complete a modern effect. Being You If you want your formal dining room to really reflect you, then you can go with a more eclectic look for your room. Any color on the wall is fair game, but try to keep the overall look of your room light and bright. You can use unusual color combinations, and by keeping your colors light, the room will still feel open and inviting.
