Choosing the Perfect Paint Color for your Front Door

By Brenda Reeves

The color of your front door can make your home look more attractive and welcoming, and the right color can add a great amount of curb appeal. The color of the front door can draw positive attention to your home, and if you are thinking of selling your home, the front door color can be the difference between a potential sale and a “drive by.” However, even if you have no intention of selling your home, the color of the front door sets the tone and anticipation for what will be found beyond the door.

What to Consider
While you want your home to look attractive and distinctive, you don’t want an offbeat color that might make your house look strange or out of place with respect to other homes in the neighborhood. This is especially important if you are selling your home. Taking a ride around your neighborhood or through upscale neighborhoods is a good way to get ideas about what looks rich and appealing. Pay special attention to homes in the same style and color as your own.

Of course, it’s important to choose a color that coordinates with other colors of your exterior. Many designers advise painting the door in a color that is different from colors used on shutters or other exterior features. For example, if you home’s exterior is sage green with white trim, a darker green may be used on the shutters and rich shade of black or cranberry can be used on the door. If you prefer a deep green for the door, then choose one of the other colors for the shutters. Generally speaking, light colors and deep colors are more eye-catching than medium shades.

Consider the Style of your Home
Traditional homes usually have a front door painted in a rich deep color, such as black, navy blue, forest green or deep red. Traditional hardware like a brass or wrought iron door knocker, kick plate and hefty door knob are details that let you add classic detail to the door. Contemporary homes often feature bold colored doors, such as paprika, and a cottage or farmhouse style home may feature a front door in teal or sunflower yellow. You certainly don’t have to conform to tradition when choosing a door color; a beautiful effect can often be achieved with colors that are not considered mainstream. Overall, the style of the home and the color of exterior features should influence the chosen color; for example, a bold contemporary home with lots of glass and muted colors could look outstanding with an unusual color on the front door. If your home is not in a neighborhood or subdivision, you can take your cues from nature. Echo or contrast with hues in a nearby mountain range, field or lake.

Foolproof Color Combos
Certain colors are nearly foolproof when it comes to door colors. Favorite light colors include a range of whites and cream to taupe and tan. However, light colors are best when used as contrast with a dark color, such as dark green, on the siding or exterior of the home. Light colored doors that match the siding tend to look bland and boring.
Navy blue often looks good with light blue or gray and black is a good choice for a brick home. Burgundy is a good choice with a gray, green or tan house and nearly any deep tone color complements a white house.

The photo of the brass kick plate gives me a great idea for our front door. Time to spruce it up. Thanks for the idea!
