Change your Color Relationship: How to Get the Paint Color of Your Dreams
By Jessica Stockton
Navigating the choices of paint colors in a home improvement store can be as frustrating as trying to find the mate of your dreams in a singles bar. There are so many colors to choose from and it’s easy to be seduced by a color that looks great in the store but doesn’t look so great in your home once it’s been rolled on the walls. Often when paint doesn’t look as it was envisioned, people end up living with a bad color because they don’t want to go to the expense and effort of changing it yet again…and again. It’s like a bad relationship that never ends. You don’t have to live with the wrong color. Here is a step-by-step plan choosing color with confidence and finding your dream color once and for all. Step 1: Let inspiration be your guide Choosing a paint color in a store without inspiration is like going on a blind date – a perfect match is possible, but not probable. To be inspired you first have to know where you are starting from. Look at the room with a fresh eye: Does it have lots of natural light, or is it naturally dark? What color is the floor, the furnishings, the window treatments? Which of these do you plan to keep and what will go or be replaced? When choosing paint, you’ll be able to narrow down your choices if you take samples with you to the paint department. If you have a carpet remnant or scrap piece of flooring and furniture fabric bring that along. Also bring an inspiration piece. Maybe there’s a pillow or candle holder that contains the color you love. Bring it along so you can either match or complement it. Relying on memory, versus samples, often results in choices that are too dark, too light, or ‘off’ – they could have clashing overtones that don’t work in the room. Step 2: Think about accents Maybe the color you love is too dark for the entire room or you have two colors, such as sage green and burgundy in a pillow and you love the combination. You can use paint to provide a backdrop for deeper or opposing colors. Cream, khaki, taupe or sand can provide a neutral backdrop for deeper colors like green and burgundy. These bright colors will pop against the neutral backdrop and if you bring them to play throughout the room – in an area rug, throw pillows, window valances, picture frames, etc. – the repetition of the colors will bring a sense of harmony and balance. You can even paint one wall in the bolder accent color to make it a focal wall that showcases a fireplace, a large piece of furniture or extraordinary wall art. Step 3: Don’t commit immediately This is good advice when choosing a life partner and when choosing paint. Just as the new love of your life can look different in the morning light, color can look completely different as the light changes throughout the day and you may have misjudged how bright or dark the room can be. Purchase you paint options (hopefully, you’ve narrowed it down to two or three) in small quart containers then paint a generous square of each color side by side in different parts of the room. After a few days you may notice that one seems to dark for the room or too ‘yellow’ for the couch. The perfect color choice just ‘feels right’. Now that you’re confident of your choice, go ahead and commit to the color of your dreams. Photo from Flickr - "HALP!!" courtesy of thecaffeinatedelf. |
