Barnyard Kitchen Theme Decorating Ideas
By Jessica Stockton
Using a barnyard theme to decorate your kitchen can be a lot of fun. You can take this theme literally, or you can interpret its essence; but either way you can enjoy a little whimsy as you carry out your design. You can opt to go in a rustic barn type direction, in a natural outdoors direction or in a farmhouse direction. You can be bold or subtle, flamboyant or sophisticated. Accents in Barn Red One of the most popular country colors is barn red. By simply using this color as an accent color in a neutral kitchen, you can evoke the idea of a barnyard. By pulling this color throughout the room, you can create a cohesive look to your kitchen. Add a painting to the wall, a checkered cloth to your table and a curtain topper with a touch of barn red, and you will create a beautifully balanced look. Cull the Critters As tempting as it may be, and as cute as they are, really resist the urge to inundate your kitchen with country critters. Even if you choose a single animal like a cow or pig, take care not to overdo it. The problem is that when your friends find out that you are decorating around an animal, everyone will get you that animal for your next birthday, and now you have too many. So unless you are great at recycling your critters, be careful, because they multiply when you are not looking. If you are trying to keep the effect a little subtler, you may want to let an animal show up on a bowl or a vase occasionally, but stay away from a room filled with tiny animal figurines. Wall Details By using wallpaper and a stencil, you can add cute and interesting borders to your room. You can find a wallpaper border that depicts farm life, has an animal motif, or maybe even has fruits and vegetables on it to run around the top of your walls. This wallpaper can be the inspiration for the entire room design, and by pulling your color palette out of the wallpaper, you will create a beautifully cohesive look for your kitchen. You could also find a great barnyard picture or painting, and use it for your inspiration as well. This is a very effective way to create a really pulled together look for your kitchen. Pots and Pans There is certainly no shortage of pots, pans and dishes with a barnyard theme. You may choose dishes with colors that evoke thoughts of a barnyard like barn red, or you may choose plates with a farmhouse pattern. You may even find dishes that have fruits and vegetables on them, and all of these choices will work equally well to add to the ambiance of the barnyard theme in your kitchen. You may want to add a pot rack and hang your copper-bottomed pots from the rack. You can add a braided rug in front of the sink to make standing more comfortable, and you may want to hang an old quilt on one of your walls. If you have a shelf over your cabinets, you may want to display your antique cookware collection around the top of your kitchen. With so many vintage farm items available in thrift stores and flea markets, there is really not end to the possibilities that you can create when you decide on a barnyard theme for your kitchen. Good information and well presented, Jessica. Keep up the fine work. frederick
A barnyard theme is something I haven't come across yet. That's good advice right there, about the figurines. My daughters have several thousand (or so it seems), so I understood that point right away.
