Adding Contemporary Touches to your Living Room

The living room is one of the most public spaces in your home and where you likely entertain most often, so it only makes sense to focus your decorating efforts there. While there are many decor motifs that can be used in a living room, many modern homeowners are decorating their living rooms in contemporary style. If you’d like to bring contemporary flair to your living room, consider the following tips. Start with a Contemporary Color Palette
Painting your living room in a fresh contemporary color is the fastest and cheapest way to give it an unmistakable update. Consider the colors of your furnishings and choose a color that will coordinate with your existing furniture; or start with a new color palette that will inspire the styling of new purchases. You can also use slipcovers on existing furniture to make it work with a new look. A contemporary room is defined by a contemporary color palette and switching from dated colors or heavy traditional colors to cool shades like pale blue, cool green or neutral gray will bring a tranquil but modern feel to the room. If you prefer warmer colors, bring in shades of orange or yellow to keep the look welcoming but still contemporary. Once you’ve settled on a wall color that will work with your furniture and whatever accessories you will keep in the room, bring in other accents and accessories to tie the look together. Wall art, throw pillows, lamps, candles, and other accents modernize the look even if you don’t replace all of your furniture. Contemporary Shapes
Contemporary decor features a mix of interesting, clean shapes like straight lines, sharp angles and flowing curvaceous shapes give a room modern style. Avoid pieces with frilly and elaborate details and go with simple, clean lines; then add interest with contrasting shapes. For example, straight rectangular lines of a sofa or couch can be contrasted with round pillows. Add a round throw rug or wall decor with a round shape to echo this shape. Play with shapes by mixing them up: Try a round side table with an angular couch or a square table lamp beside a curvilinear sofa. Mixing shapes in this way still maintains the simplicity that is the hallmark of modern style, but adds visual interest and keeps the eye moving throughout the space. Pulling it All Together
The final step in finishing the room is adding the right accents and accessories to pull the look together. Modern wall decor, such as an abstract painting or bold metal wall art, can be used as a striking focal point that unites the color palette of the room. A trio of nimbly shaped glass vases or a unique table lamp may double as practical accents with artistic flair. An area rug that features spirited accent colors can be the final finishing touch that ties together all the color threads used in your gorgeous, contemporary living room.
