A Splash of Color Offers Refreshment to a Contemporary Great Room

By Jessica Stockton

Using color is one of the quickest ways to change the look of a room or even just freshen it up. Even a room as large as a great room can get a speedy makeover with some quick color changes. Here are several ways to keep your contemporary great room contemporary with a simple color change.

Bold is Beautiful

It is widely believed that if you want to make a room look larger simply paint it a light color, and that you should never paint a room a dark color, because it will make it feel insufferably small. While this is probably true about 80% of the time, there are certain times when you can break this rule with striking results. By painting a room a darker color and filling it with lighter hued furniture you will actually create a room that looks larger. Then add a piece of light colored artwork that will positively pop against a darker, bolder wall color, or you can highlight windows by giving them lighter treatments. Using slipcovers is a great way to make a big color change in a room without spending a lot of money.

Texture Talks

By coupling texture with color you get a bigger bang for your buck, and here are some creative texture ideas.

You can simply use a texture additive in your paint. Additives in coarse, medium and fine textures can be used, and if your walls have any imperfections, textured paint is a great way to hide these flaws. Make sure to use a textured roller to really enhance the look. Anytime that you opt to add texture to paint, plan to use about one third more paint than you normally would because the texture will not allow the paint to spread as thinly.

When you are adding texture to your walls, make sure to do all of the walls at the same time, because it is almost impossible to recreate the identical texture in a second application. You should try to do the ceiling as well if it will be sharing the same texture as the walls.

There are all kinds of additives that you can use in your paint. For example, there are additives that add shimmer to your paint, and this is an excellent way to brighten a room that does not have a lot of natural lighting. The shimmer bounces light around the room and can actually make the room feel larger also.

Consider creating texture on your walls simply through painting techniques. A tone on tone pattern creates design and depth that actually adds texture to walls. You can opt for subtle or bold colors to add even whatever level of drama you desire.

A tone on tone application using a sea sponge or rag rolling creates beautiful subtle texture on the wall. You can use as many colors as you want in your design, but the more colors you use, the more difficult it is to balance the colors. Because of this, you may want to start with a couple of colors and let your design evolve from there.

Another texture application that will work nicely on your walls is stippling. This technique lets you create richly subtle effects. Use it to soften the look of a bold colored wall, by stippling with a muted color that is a pale version of the same hue.

Another very effective painting technique to add texture to the walls is color washing and dragging. Both of these painting methods let you refresh the look of a room by quickly changing its color and texture.

Avoid this one color mistake

Never select a color because it is the current trend unless you absolutely love it. Instead, choose a color combination that speaks to you and makes you comfortable and happy. You have to live in this room, and if you paint it lime green and hate the color you will just be miserable. A better option is to choose your colors for the wall, and insert trendy colors through your accessories. They will pull the room into the present, and they are easy to switch out if the trend changes before you are ready to redecorate again.
