A Handy Guide for Choosing Decorative Pillows
By Brenda Reeves
Decorative throw pillows and pillow shams add personal style to a living space or bedroom while also providing comfort and ease. However, before adding a mountain of pillows to a bed or couch, think about function as well. Having to remove stacks of pillows before bed each night or having to scoot them out of the way so you can sit on the couch, makes your life a little more stressful and a little less convenient. And in a small room, too many pillows can make the space seem even more cluttered. So how many pillows are just too many? Here are some guidelines to consider before you toss one more pillow on the bed. Think Function and Comfort A luxurious pile of pillows can invite you to snuggle on the bed for a midday power nap; pillows can make the couch in the family room more comfortable or the rocker on the front porch more relaxing. And that is the key to choosing the optimum number of pillows: Comfort is king. If the pillows add to your comfort and enjoyment, then you are probably using the correct number. If, however, they are more of a hassle than a comfort and you are just using them for decorative effect, you may want to consider removing a few. Size Does Matter Look at the size of the room and the size of the piece of furniture when deciding how many pillows are needed. In a big room with oversized furniture, you can get away with lots of pillows and bigger pillows because they won’t visually cram the space. In a smaller room with scaled down furniture too many pillows can feel overwhelming, making it difficult to even sit down. Consider the size of the pillows in relation to the piece of furniture and the size of the room and try to choose pillows that are scaled to both. This will help maintain pleasing proportion and balance and you won’t feel like you’re being suffocated under a mass of pillows. Consider Style and Ambiance The style of the room should also be considered: For instance, a romantic, Old World opulent style bedroom is a more appropriate venue for piles of pillows on the bed than a serene contemporary bedroom where you want to create a Zen like minimalism. Choose pillows that match and support the style of the room. In a contemporary living room, for example, a few bold colored pillows with graphic designs may contribute more to overall visual impact than a scattering of too many bland pillows. Other Things to Think About Style and color are just one part of the equation; number and balance the other. In a traditionally styled living room, an even number of pillows arranged symmetrically on either end of the couch is the tried-and-true formula. But in a contemporary or eclectic room, an odd number of pillows arranged asymmetrically are a better match to the style. |
