A Great Room’s Hidden Storage
By Jessica Stockton
Frequently it is the largest room in the home, and it is also the most used room in the house. This is why finding and maximizing hidden storage space in the great room is a great idea. It keeps items close by, organized and out of sight. Here are some handy tips to keep your great room neat, organized and ready for action. Double Duty Furniture Better than shelves are cabinets. Since they have doors, you can pack them full of all kinds of stuff, and when you shut the door it looks instantly neat. While shelves are one tool to help you organize a room, they frequently look just as messy and unorganized as if you had never picked up the room. The clutter is still showing, it is just on the shelf instead of on the floor or table. So if you are not lucky enough to have cabinets or drawers to store you stuff, then invest in some big storage bins that fit on your shelf. This way you can fill the bins with your things, and put the crisp, neat bin on the shelf. Then you see a shelf of uniform bins, which now look neat, tidy and organized. Cabinets and bins with lids also have the advantage of keeping your stored items dust free. If you have bookshelves in your great room, try interspersing storage containers with your books for storing smaller items. This will keep your bookshelves uniform and neat, and it is a handy place to store small items that you use with some regularity. Storage Spaces Furniture is another way to make use of hidden storage. Of course chests, trunks, storage benches and roll top desks are all great furniture storage solutions while offering functional solutions to the room as well. Using a storage cube for an end table or footstool is a practical way to get your furniture to do double duty in your great room. A big trunk to store children’s toys and family games is a handy addition to the room, and it can double as a coffee table or a bench. By keeping these items handy but out of sight, you keep your great room looking neat and ready for guests at a moment’s notice. Basket Beauty Baskets add design and storage options to any room. They have a lot of texture, and they form a nice, uniform look on any shelf. They are just right for storing magazines, mail or even car keys. A basket is a handy place to empty coat pockets so you do not lose receipts or loose change. More Tips If you have floor to ceiling storage shelves in your great room, rather then fill them with bins, you may opt to simply hang a curtain from ceiling to floor to close and hide away the clutter. Adding extra hooks in your closet for keys or storage bins is a easy way to keep small items organized and out of sight. Being able to put it away and close the door lets anyone keep their home neat and tidy. Photo from Flickr - "Living Room 1" courtesy of 22241526@N07 . |
