3 Guidelines to Consider when Choosing Wall Paint
By Brenda Reeves
Take a look at the color samples in any paint department and the choices can be almost dizzying. There are literally thousands of colors to choose from and there are many things to consider before you grab a can of paint and start rolling it on your walls. Of course, you want to choose a color that appeals to you, but you also need to consider features of the room that will remain constant: This could include flooring or carpeting, furniture and upholstery, window treatments and accessories. The color that you choose can also influence the apparent size and spaciousness of the room, as well as the mood and ambiance. Here are three guidelines to keep in mind as you sort through all those paint color cards. 1. Consider whether the Color is Cool or Warm You may feel a little confused about the concept of cool and warm colors, but it is important to understand the concept to create a visually harmonious room. Red, yellow, orange and pink are warm colors; blue, purple and green are cool colors. Warm colors give a room inviting ambiance, while cool tones lend an air of sophistication. The confusion usually begins when you start bringing neutral colors into the mix: Neutral colors such as white, beige or gray can have cool or warm undertones. For example, a shade of white might have cool blue or warm yellow undertones. The same undertones exist in the colors of your bedding, flooring, window treatments, wall art and accessories. It’s important to choose colors that have complementary undertones to create a well designed look. Color chips and small cans of sample color can help you make the right choice when viewed in the lighting of the room that is to be painting. 2. Consider the Size of the Room Color can be used to visually manipulate a space, making it seem larger or smaller. Light colors add the illusion of spaciousness, while dark colors add intimacy and can bring an oversize cavernous room down to a more comfortable scale. Light colors are great for small kitchens, bathrooms or living rooms, making them feel more expansive. A deep color can be a wonderful choice for a room that has high ceilings or a bedroom, or dining room, where you want to create a cozy, intimate feeling. 3. Consider Light and Mood Finally, consider the amount of natural light in a room and the mood you wish to convey. If a room is on the north side of your house and doesn’t get much natural light, light colors on the walls can help make the room feel bigger and brighter. Using white on the ceiling can also brighten any space. Light bright colors are just the ticket if you want to create a cheerful look, say in a kitchen or family room. If your goal is to create drama and elegance, dark rich colors may be just what you are looking for. |
